Two Sayreville residents were arrested and charged after being found with a crack pipe and burglary tools following a traffic stop in Mendham Township on Sunday, Dec. 7, authorities said.
Officers observed a vehicle with an altered license plate and attempted to stop the vehicle, though it accelerated and attempted to elude police, Mendham Township police said.
The driver, Matthew Gehring ended up driving into a driveway at the end of Thackery Lane, striking a parked vehicle and then part of the house, police said.
Gehring attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended following a brief pursuit. The passenger, Justin Nowicki, also attempted to flee but was unsuccessful, police said.
They both were found to be in possession of crack pipes, police said. Officers on scene also located a safe, burglary tools, and cash scattered around the scene and in the vehicle, which was also stolen, that tied them to a burglary that occurred at the Delta Gas Station in Chester Township just prior to the motor vehicle stop, police said.
Gehring and Nowicki were placed under arrest and charged with several criminal offenses including possession of stolen property, eluding police, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstruction of law, and criminal mischief, police said.
