COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man is dead after he was struck by a garbage truck in south Columbus early Tuesday morning.

Around 4 a.m., the driver of a garbage truck was heading west on Corr Road between Lockbourne Road and Parsons Avenue. At the same time, police said 52-year-old Kevin Courts was standing in the road.

A vehicle ahead of the garbage truck veered to the right to avoid hitting Courts as he began to walk. The garbage truck driver attempted to veer left to avoid Courts, but the man was struck and knocked to the ground.

Police said the driver stayed at the scene and called 911.

Courts was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 4:36 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
