LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Dozens of students gathered Monday for the Michigan State Police (MSP) Youth Violence Prevention Summit to learn how to spot warning signs of violence before it happens.

School safety programs have traditionally meant lockdowns and emergency drills created by law enforcement and administrators. Now, MSP is allowing students to join in on the conversation.

The one-day interactive forum connects students with law enforcement and mental health professionals to discuss violence prevention, digital safety, mental health and preparedness.

Colonel James F. Grady II at MSP said more youth are being killed by gun violence than dying in traffic crashes. He said his generation didn’t face these issues, and now it’s up to students to lead the way for change.
