A 14-year-old girl has been placed on probation for her role in an arson at a Niagara Falls hotel.

The teen, who cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in Ontario court of justice in St. Catharines on Monday and pleaded guilty to a charge of arson.

“This was a potentially very dangerous situation,” Judge Richard LeDressay told the teen.

“I want to reiterate to you that if you were an adult, over the age of 18 years, for this offence the Criminal Code has various maximums — a period of incarceration can range from six months to up to life in prison.

“I want to give you an idea, because it’s a reflection of how serious Parliament views this offence.”

The Grade 9 student, who had no prior criminal record, was placed on probation for two years.
