SEATTLE — The Seattle City Council approved two major police labor contracts Tuesday night after protesters disrupted the meeting, forcing council members to briefly retreat to their offices to complete the final vote on record.
Chants from roughly two dozen demonstrators drowned out final comments from council members as they prepared to vote on the agreements just weeks after two deadly police shootings that killed Christian Nelson and Jack Paleli , reigniting calls for stronger police accountability.
“I live in the area [of the recent police shooting], and I was terrified to come home that day because someone was murdered so close to where I live,” said Olive Lacey, a south Seattle resident.
