Turn on any holiday movie and you’re almost guaranteed to see snow. The fluffy white stuff is synonymous with the season, but not everyone gets the chance to enjoy — or endure — it.
If you want to give your kids a fun snow experience without leaving the house or let your Elf on the Shelf make a snowy mess, consider making your own snow. You can use a mix of cornstarch and lotion, or baking soda and foam shaving cream. Mix until it reaches the right consistency, then it’s ready to play with. You can also put the mixture in the freezer for a really frigid effect. Freezing it also makes it more pliable and perfect for molding into snowballs or creating shapes with cookie cutters.
If you love a homemade project that won’t create a faux-snowy mess or you're in need of a fun way to occupy your kids, keep reading for more holiday crafts they can enjoy.

Make a snowman that won’t melt
You can use the fake snow to make a snowman, but if you want a mess-free snowman, consider making one out of socks or tea candles.
To make a sock snowman, gather up:
- A tall cup or pint glass.
- Tube socks.
- 3 cups of rice.
- Funnel.
- Rubber band.
- Buttons and beads.
- Ribbon.
- Scissors.
- Hot glue gun.
Place the tube sock in the cup and fold the elastic edges over the rim. This will make it easier to fill. Pour the rice into the sock using the funnel. Tie the sock off and trim any excess fabric. Then, wrap a rubber band around the sock to create two sections.

Create a cool hat using a colorful tube sock. Cut the sock near the heel and use the toe portion to cover the tied-off section of the filled sock.
Glue buttons onto the bottom portion of the sock. Use smaller buttons or beads to make the eyes and mouth, and an orange one for the nose. Finish it off with a scarf made from a ribbon tied around the neck.
For a cute tea candle snowman ornament, you’ll need:
- Battery-operated tea light candles.
- Red pipe cleaners.
- Sandpaper.
- Ribbon and twine.
- Black marker.
- Hot glue gun.
- Scissors.
Gently sand one edge of the electric tea light. Using a piece of pipe cleaner long enough to wrap halfway around the candle, glue the ends over the sanded section. Then wrap extra pieces of pipe cleaner into small buns and glue them onto each end, creating little earmuffs.

Slide a piece of twine between the candle and the unglued part of the pipe cleaner. Tie it off to create a loop you can use to hang the snowman on a tree or hook.
Glue the ribbon into a loop and attach it to the bottom of the candle so it looks like a scarf.
Draw eyes and a mouth on the front of the candle, using the electric flame as the snowman’s carrot nose. Once everything is dry, hang it on the tree or around the house and enjoy!
DIY ornament wreath
Add a welcoming touch to your door with a ornament wreath.
You’ll need:
- Foam crafting wreath.
- Ribbon, wire or cord.
- Ornaments.
- Hot glue gun.
Plastic ornaments might be the best and most durable option in case the wreath falls — and they make for easier post-season storage.
Lay the foam crafting wreath flat and loop the ribbon, wire or cord around the top. This will be used to hang the finished product, so choose a length that matches how low you want it to sit. Once it’s tied, use a hot glue gun to secure it to the wreath.

Next, glue ornaments to the inside of the foam wreath. Once that’s complete, glue a round of ornaments along the outside.
Then fill in the remaining space with ornaments, mixing different sizes to cover any gaps. Don’t be afraid to go out and up, either — creating layers and varying heights adds dimension to the wreath. Using ornaments with different shapes, textures and colors will enhance the final look even more.
Allow the wreath to dry completely before hanging.

How to make snow globes

- Dish soap.
- Glitter.

- Water-resistant graft glue.

Glue the figurine to the snow globe lid. While it dries, fill the globe almost completely with distilled water, then add 2 to 3 teaspoons of glycerin and a drop of dish soap. Add a generous amount of glitter and stir. Once everything is mixed, screw the lid back on, shake and enjoy.
You can also decorate the base by painting it, covering it with ribbon or attaching it to a festive stand.
