London city hall staff have proposed charging the buyers of an estimated 50,000 older London homes to remove weeping tiles – a move they say would better protect the Thames River, but would cost each buyer thousands to complete the work. LFP reporter Norman De Bono examines the reaction.

City staff is recommending that city council approve mandating the disconnection of weeping tile drainage systems, which they call a “significant contributor” to the “high level” of water inflow and infiltration into its sewage system.
Staff want it mandatory in tens of thousands of older London homes when each is sold. It would cost an estimated $5,000 to $10,000, to be covered by the buyer.
