A London MPP is calling on the province to declare homelessness a state of emergency amid an estimated 50 deaths among unhoused people in the city this year.

Terence Kernaghan (NDP – London North Centre) pressed Premier Doug Ford during Question Period on Tuesday to declare homelessness a state of emergency in Ontario’s downtowns, arguing the move would give municipalities the resources they urgently need.

“What we are seeing in London and across Ontario are the consequences of this government’s choices,” Kernaghan said in a statement. “People have been abandoned without housing or support, while Conservatives scrapped rent control, refused to build affordable and supportive housing, and failed to properly invest in mental health and addiction services.”
