John Swinney is under growing pressure to sack his Justice Secretary after correspondence obtained by The Herald confirmed Angela Constance misrepresented Professor Alexis Jay’s views during a debate on grooming gangs.

The minister told MSPs in September that the former chair of the UK’s Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse "shares my view" that there was no need for further inquiries into child sexual abuse and exploitation and that it was time to “just get on with it”.

However, a damning email sent directly to Ms Constance by Prof Jay days later makes clear that, while the minister accurately quoted her words, they had been made in January in relation to England and Wales following comments by Elon Musk, and “had nothing to do" with Scotland.
