A photo of a rare and elusive silver fox taken by a second-year student in Niagara College’s photography program is getting national exposure.

St. Catharines resident William Mitchell captured photos of the animal while walking in the woods. He submitted one image to Canadian Geographic’s 2025 wildlife photography competition.

Out of more than 10,000 submissions, his photo was one of 98 selected for the special collector’s edition.

In a news release, the aspiring wildlife photographer said the rare animal — an uncommon colour variation of the red fox that makes up only 10 per cent of the population — is one he has been interested in photographing for years.
