Shenandoah County now has broadband access available to nearly every home and business, Shentel told supervisors Tuesday, as the company announced the completion of a four-year expansion that brought high-speed internet to more than 7,200 previously unserved locations.
The work stems from two Virginia Telecommunications Initiative (VATI) grants awarded in 2022 and 2023, combined with federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars and a major private investment from Shentel. Altogether, the project totals roughly $47 million: $3.7 million from Shenandoah County, $17.1 million from the commonwealth, and more than $26 million from Shentel.
Shentel representative Bryan Byrd said the company has constructed approximately 610 miles of new broadband plant, supported by eight new fiber node cabinets.
