AMHERST, NY — A fire sent four people to a hospital and prompted a road closure Wednesday night in Amherst.
The four people were taken by ambulance to a hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening. Fire inspectors said the blaze at Village Square Apartments caused an estimated $1 million in structure damage, citing extensive smoke and water.
Several residents were displaced and are receiving help from American Red Cross.

Amherst Police closed Main Street between Union Road and Grove Street while crews battled the fire. Main Street reopened to traffic around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, though Amherst police and fire crews were still on the scene.
