BARRE, Vt. (WCAX) - It appears the bitterly cold temperatures Monday night into Tuesday morning may have killed a homeless man in Barre.
Police responded to the call yesterday morning.
51-year-old Richard Govea’s body was found in a state known as “paradoxical undressing.” That’s when a person who’s freezing to death feels irrationally hot and disoriented as their body shuts down and starts to remove clothing.
He was found on North Main Street across from the liquor store in Barre. There was a -17 degree wind chill Monday night, and police suspect hypothermia may have played a role in his death. People I spoke to in the liquor store said Govea was an extremely kind man. Employees at the liquor store told me he was cut off from drinking any more at around 2 p.m. on Monday.
