MAIZE, Kan. - Two Maize South High School student-athletes made history on Wednesday.

"I think it's still so surreal right now," Maize South senior Carre Kurth said.

Elliette Nelson and Carre Kurth signed letters to continue their academic and athletic careers at William Woods University, becoming the first-ever girls flag football signees in the Wichita area.

William Woods gears up to kick off its second season of women's flag football next year.

"I know that it's giving a lot of girls opportunities to play more sports and do more with their athletic abilities and I think that it's really great to be a leader in a new sport and pave a new path," Kurth said.

With the backing of the Kansas City Chiefs, girls flag football kicked off in Wichita this fall.
