A deadly outbreak of equine herpes virus has left several horses dead and sickened others in eight states.
The outbreak was reported in November in horses competing at the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Finals and Elite Barrel Race in Waco, Texas.
At least two horses died and several dozen have been sickened.
Strains of the highly contagious respiratory infection can cause serious neurological disease in horses.
The outbreak has put horse communities on edge and led to the suspension of rodeos and other equine events.
