ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) - Some people in the city of St. Albans say a mysterious smell has been creeping into their homes for most of this year. City officials believe the smell is coming from the St. Albans Creamery.

Earlier this year, the creamery began using a new system to filter its dairy waste to comply with a state settlement over alleged wastewater violations. That’s when the smell started.

For months, the city has worked with the creamery’s parent company, Dairy Farmers of America, to stop the stink.

Neighbors say that when it’s this cold, you don’t really smell it, but when it heats up, it gets rancid.
