Oregon’s two U.S. senators reintroduced a bill Wednesday that would establish the legal age at 21 to purchase hemp-derived products with intoxicating ingredients, like THC gummies and drinks.
The bill is meant to undo sweeping restrictions laid out in legislation that passed Congress last month. When those prohibitions take effect next fall, they are expected to wipe out as much as 95% to 99% of the nation’s hemp industry, including almost all of the 2,000 acres of hemp grown in Oregon.
Backers of last month’s legislation — including Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell — said it was necessary because the hemp industry is so highly unregulated that the plant is being used to make dangerous products marketed to children, like candy that contains THC. McConnell, however, ran into pushback
