December 11, 1940 - Johnson Lake began to fill in December 1940 after its dam was closed. It was named for George E. Johnson, an electrical and civil engineer.
At the time the lake was formed, Johnson was also Chief Engineer and General Manager of Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District.
Johnson Lake is now a popular recreational lake in central Nebraska and features about 2,500 surface acres, a swimming beach and public boat ramps.
