Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry's office on Thursday punched back at Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser a day after Nungesser blasted Border Patrol's sweeps on people with legal status across the state, calling his comments "disappointing."
Nungesser said Wednesday that the mass sweeps were hurting the economy and that he had received numerous calls from business owners whose workers, with valid work permits, are staying home. The statement put Nungesser, a Republican at odds with Landry, a Republican and a Trump ally, and other Republican leaders.
"They said, 'We're getting rid of the criminals,'" Nungesser said Wednesday. "These people, a lot of them have played by the rules and have a work visa and now are fearful."
