The soft glow of candle light on the faces of the Temple Beth El’s congregation during Hanukkah is Rabbi Mark Miller’s favorite sight.
Rabbi Miller, 56, will lead a ceremony Sunday evening to mark the beginning of Hanukkah, with families lighting their own nine-branched candelabrum. One candle used to light each of the other eight, marking each night of Hanukkah, sometimes spelled Chanukah.
“We are singing as the candles burn down. It’s a stunning moment not like anything else during the year,” he said, adding that Hanukkah is a time “when we focus on what it means to Jewish in America, something that has for a long time been a wonderful reality but we know that often comes with difficulties.
