Gayle King is in the business of telling the news, not being at the center of it.
The longtime "CBS Mornings" cohost addressed recent speculation about her future at the daytime talk show during an appearance on "Sherri" Thursday, Dec. 11. Variety reported in October that the veteran journalist, 70, was expected to exit her current role when her contract expires. King has held the CBS News job for 13 years.
"I've decided I'm going to stay out of the drama — and there is some drama," King told host Sherri Shepherd. "I'm going to stay out of that. I'm just going to continue to do my job."
King's comments follow CBS' Wednesday announcement that her cohost, Tony Dokoupil, will be leaving "CBS Mornings" in January to anchor "CBS Evening News." Dokoupil's appointment comes a year after his "Evening News" predecessor, Norah O'Donnell, revealed her departure from the newscast.
While King did not get into specifics on the newsroom "drama," the TV host said she's been baffled by the differing accounts she's come across in the media.
"What I say is this, I'm not going to negotiate in the press, but I hear one thing in the building and one side outside of the building," King said. "I'll be reading an article and going, 'That's not true.'"
King added that she enjoys her job and that she's been told that CBS "like[s] me."
A spokesperson for CBS News told USA TODAY in October that "there have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract that runs through May 2026." The statement added that King is "a truly valued part of CBS, and we look forward to engaging with her about the future."
Regarding Dokoupil's "CBS Mornings" departure, the Emmy-nominated newscaster acknowledged that her cohost's exit is "certainly going to mean changes" for the show. But no matter what the future holds, King said she doesn't have a plan B.
"I don't go in hypotheticals," King said. "It's like if you're running for office and said, 'Well, if you don't win, what are you going to do?' I don't think like that. And I also believe everything works out the way it's supposed to."
