TUSCALOOSA, Ala. —
An independent alumni group of the University of Alabama is fundraising for two university-affiliated magazines that were suspended by the administration, citing new federal anti-discrimination and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies.
Funds raised will be used to cover printing costs and other needs, according to a statement by MASTHEAD.
MASTHEAD (Media Alumni Seeking to Highlight Equity and Diversity) said it is looking to raise $25,000 for both Alice Magazine and Nineteen Fifty-Six . The publications were put on hold because both focus on specific demographics.
Nineteen Fifty-Six is geared toward Black students, while Alice focuses on women.
The fundraising push, organizers say, underscores a gap in coverage for marginalized students.
