The co-owner of a Charlotte, North Carolina-area brewery company, Sycamore Brewing, was charged with the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl after allegedly breaking into her home on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
According to court records obtained by USA TODAY, Justin Tawse Brigham, 44, was charged with three felonies, including statutory rape of a child under 15, first-degree burglary and indecent liberties with a child.
Brigham was arrested by the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, Dec. 11, according to an arrest warrant. The document alleges that Brigham entered a home in Stanfield, North Carolina, some 24 miles east of Charlotte, and attacked the girl while others were in the same house.
Court records also show that Brigham was ordered to surrender his passport and was banned from leaving North Carolina. Moreover, he was ordered not to have contact with the victim or use social media.
Sarah Taylor, the other owner of the brewing company, said in a statement on Thursday that Brigham divested all interest in the company and will no longer be involved in the operations. According to the Charlotte Observer, Taylor and Brigham are married to each other.
“I am devastated by the charges against Justin and the pain this has inflicted on our family and others,” Taylor said. “Our team remains my highest priority as a Mom and business owner.”
Brigham is being held on a $10 million bond, according to court records.
Court records show Brigham has retained legal counsel, but a defense attorney is not listed. USA TODAY contacted the Stanly County District Attorney's Office on Dec. 11, but has not received a response.
