The food truck grove, game zone, pavilion and other features of Lubbock's long-planned downtown park are a step closer to coming to fruition.
With ceremonial shovels in hand and community members gathered in celebration, the Lubbock Downtown Park Conservancy officially broke ground and unveiled the name of the city's downtown park during a ceremony Thursday.
Officials including Mayor Mark McBrayer unveiled "Pickering Park" as the name of the downtown green space that leaders said they hope will transform the heart of Lubbock's central business district for generations to come. The ceremony took place at the future park site at Broadway and Avenue L.
Pickering Park is named in honor of the Pickering family of Lubbock, whose leadership gift helped make the project a reality, according to
