A Coos County Superior Court judge on Thursday rejected the notion that post traumatic stress disorder played a role in a Berlin man's slaying of the mother of their two children, and sentenced him to 45 years to life in prison.

In October, a jury found Dustin Duren, 38, guilty of willful second-degree murder in the death of Caitlyn Naffziger, 31, on the afternoon of Feb. 29, 2024, in his apartment at 1063 Main St.

Duren fled the scene after shooting Naffziger, but was apprehended and surrendered following the issuance of an amber alert for him, his car and his daughters with Naffziger — Elowyn and Vaelyn.

According to the state, Elowyn, then 4, was in Duren’s custody while Vaelyn, 1, was in the custody of her mother.
