For those who are hungry, the term ‘food insecurity’ doesn’t always describe their situation. Especially for the elderly, after paying bills, there may not be any money left at all.
“Seniors who are living on $1,000 a month and are just trying to get their medication and not be late on their light bill – they’ve got maybe $76 left to spend on groceries, which we know is not enough to live on. So, they love their Christmas boxes,” Morristown-Hamblen Central Services Executive Director Ashley Hux said.
That’s where the Citizen Tribune Holiday Hope Fund comes in.
A large part of the annual program’s funding is directed toward serving the older individuals who sign up. Each food box contains a turkey, corn meal, sugar, green beans, corn, peas, pinto beans, macaroni and cheese, brownie mix,
