San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie on Thursday helped break ground on a new housing tower in the city’s Lower Nob Hill neighborhood.

A third of all the 303 units in the 23-story tower at 1111 Sutter St. will be designated for lower-income residents – the only such project of that size and scale happening in the city right now.

The developer on the project said it should be completed within about 23 months.

This week, the board of supervisors approved Lurie’s proposal to boost housing projects across the city. It’s an effort that’s necessary to meet state building mandates or face state-imposed consequences. Lurie said he will be signing the new housing ordinance into law on Friday.

“When we cut red tape, we support housing, we encourage investment, good things follow,” he said.
