Tater tots won't be on the menu at Washoe County schools for the foreseeable future.

In a brief update Thursday, the Washoe County School District said sharp bits of plastic were found in tater tots at 18 elementary schools, up from the 12 that were first reported.

The contaminated tots, discovered Nov. 25, originated outside the district, it said. One child received a small cut to a finger but there were no other reported injuries.

The district said it notified Northern Nevada Public Health and the Food and Drug Administration

Distributor McCain Foods issued a nationwide recall Dec. 3 of Ore-Ida tater tots produced in Burley, Idaho, from Oct. 9-14.
