You’re stuck with what you’ve got when you’re renting. While it would be nice to have a fancy Jacuzzi tub with jets and lights, or a toilet with a bidet, that type of rental — or upgrade — might not be in the budget.
So take the home improvements into your own hands and add these simple fixes to make your space closer to the bathroom of your dreams. These upgrades require little to no installation, which means your security deposit isn’t at risk and you can take everything with you when it’s time to move.
Watch this video to see how you can turn your bathroom into a peaceful sanctuary.
It’s a good day with a bidet
Everybody poops, but not everyone has a bidet to give them that fresh, clean feeling afterward. The good news? You don’t have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to add one to your toilet. There are plenty of affordable bidet attachments on the market that can be installed in just a few minutes.
The easiest, and most renter-friendly option, is a bidet that attaches to your toilet seat and connects to the water line running from the toilet tank. Once installed, it’s ready to use. These models typically use cold water since they draw from the same line that fills the toilet. Don’t let the word “cold” scare you — the water is usually close to room temperature, though it may feel cooler on winter mornings. The more you use a bidet, the less you notice the temperature.
Hot-water bidets do exist, but they aren’t always renter-friendly. Depending on your bathroom setup, installing one may require power tools and additional plumbing work to reach the hot-water line.
Most bidets let you adjust the force of the stream and offer three functions: a front clean, a rear clean and a self-clean. It may take a little practice to get your positioning right, but once you’ve mastered it, you might find yourself missing your bidet whenever you travel or use a toilet without one.
Renter friendly bathroom makeover
Turn your bathtub into a relaxing spa retreat. With just a few simple rechargeable gadgets, your basic bath can become your favorite staycation spa.
- Speaker.
A speaker can play your favorite relaxing podcast, continue your current audiobook or blast the playlist that gets you hyped for the day.
Find a speaker with buttons so you can skip songs, adjust the volume or even answer a call without handling your smartphone with wet fingers.
Choose a rechargeable, portable speaker so you can take it around the bathroom, throughout the house or even on outdoor adventures.
- Cordless jet.
Turn any bath into a spa experience with a cordless jet. Suction it to the side of your tub, choose your preferred speed and mode, then sit back and relax. Don’t forget your favorite bubble bath — and to lock the door behind you.
Bonus relaxation tip: Turn up the volume on your waterproof speaker so you can’t hear your spouse or children knocking on the bathroom door.
- Light.
Use an underwater light to set the mood. You can find waterproof lights that suction to your tub or pool. Choose either a solid color or a rotating cycle of different ones. It’s a simple way to make time in the tub more fun for kids or adults.
- Tub tray and cushion.
A relaxing bath isn’t so relaxing when you can’t get comfortable in the tub or don’t have a safe place to set your book or candle. A tub cushion can save your back and neck, while a tray keeps your books, candles, snacks and favorite relaxation beverage safely above the water.
