The Supreme Court of India has observed that acid attackers who forcibly make victims ingest acid must be tried under the Attempt to Murder provisions of the penal laws, ANI reported.

The court emphasised that such cases cannot be treated merely under the provision for “voluntarily causing grievous hurt.”

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi underscored the severity of these attacks, stating that perpetrators of such heinous acts are a serious threat to society and the rule of law.

“There should not be any second opinion. These matters must be tried under Section 307 (Attempt to Murder). In penal laws, exceptions can be added for the most heinous and inhumane cases. These people have no right to roam in society,” CJI Kant said.
