Syracuse, N.Y. – Clinging to a 59-54 lead with six minutes left in Thursday night’s game against St. Joseph’s, the Syracuse Orange needed a defensive stop.
Syracuse got one, forcing St. Joe’s forward Jaiden Glover-Toscano into a missed shot.
But St. Joseph’s guard Derek Simpson out-fought a couple of Orange players for the rebound. Then he missed a shot. Syracuse had gotten the defensive stop after all.
Except this time Glover-Toscano snared the rebound and then he scored on a third-chance shot in the paint, closing the gap to a fingernail-nibbling 59-56.
Syracuse (6-3) would survive St. Joseph’s upset bid, holding off the Hawks for a 71-63 victory at the JMA Dome. But rebounding joined free throw shooting as an issue that keeps popping up at ill-opportune times for the Orange.
