Opposition MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla regarding the impeachment motion against Madras High Court Judge GR Swaminathan on December 9.

56 former judges of the country have opposed the impeachment motion by opposition MPs against Madras High Court Judge Justice G.R. Swaminathan. In an open letter, the former judges stated that this move is an attempt to create political-ideological pressure on judges and intimidate them.

The former judges said that even if the allegations of the MPs are accepted, threatening a judge with impeachment based on their views or decisions is an attack on the independence of the judiciary. They stated that if one judge is targeted today, it could affect the entire judiciary tomorrow.
