NEXTON — The Town of Summerville is looking to annex a large swath of largely-undeveloped land in one of the fastest-growing communities in the tri-county area, and residents who live nearby are afraid to lose their rural way of life.
Summerville’s town council advanced a plan to annex nearly 738 acres of Nexton, a largely unincorporated suburban development in Berkeley County, on Dec. 11. Residents packed the meeting, as well as Berkeley County Council’s meeting Dec. 8, to speak out against the proposal. Several residents from adjacent rural communities opposed the move, expressing concern the strain further growth would put on roads, public services and the environment.
