MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University Police have issued a Community Notice following reports of online fraud and harassment schemes aimed at students.
University Police Chief Sherry St. Clair is urging caution after at least five reports have been investigated in recent months.
Some of the cases include multiple “sextortion” complaints where students have reported someone threatening to distribute private and sensitive material if monetary demands were not met.
“Our advice is to only interact online, via social media, or by phone call or text with people you know,” Chief Sherry St. Clair said. “Be skeptical and ask questions, especially when it comes to unsolicited calls or text messages.”
