BILLINGS — In 1990 a piece of the heavens fell in Roundup. But you'll have to go to New York City if you want to see it right now.
The Roundup iron meteorite, a 10-and-a-half pound chunk of rock comprised mostly of iron, is part of an auction at Christie's in New York. The sale, dubbed "Skybreakers: Between Heaven and Earth," is full of specimens from the Macovich Collection and closes Friday morning. As of press time, the Roundup rock's bid is up to $20,000, with an expected sale price of $25,000 to $35,000.
The Roundup meteorite is what's left of an asteroid that was shattered in a burst of energy, leaving its iron core floating through space. It floated through the cosmos for an untold amount of time before finally plummeting into earth.
