New figures from Network Rail have revealed the significant disruption caused when vehicles collide with railway bridges.
From April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025, there were 1,666 reported bridge strikes in Britain, equivalent to one every five hours, costing the rail industry around £12million in delays and cancellations.
A total of 158 of those strikes occurred in Scotland , with Edinburgh the worst-affected area with 12 strikes ahead of West Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire, which both saw 11.
Aberdeen recorded four strikes, with one causing significant delays earlier this year after a vehicle struck the barrier wall over the line between the city and Dyce .
There were no bridge strikes in Aberdeenshire , while neighbouring Moray had four and Angus recorded seven in the period
