California’s Central Valley leads the nation in poinsettia production, and Duarte Nursery in Hughson is among the region’s largest family-run growers. The nursery draws thousands of visitors each November as the Duarte family showcases more than 40,000 poinsettias in their massive greenhouse complex. Third-generation operator Cassandra Duarte explains how long nightly darkness triggers the plant’s holiday colors, while “Poinsettia Lady” Anita Duarte dispels myths about toxicity and highlights the plant’s roots in southern Mexico. With more than 100 varieties now grown and National Poinsettia Day recognized on Dec. 12, the nursery remains a major hub for California poinsettia production.
