President Donald Trump said on social media Thursday he is pardoning former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, even though such a pardon would have no effect on Peters’ standing because she wasn’t convicted of any federal crimes.

Trump has said repeatedly on social media that Peters should be released from prison, although the mechanisms his administration have tried so far have all failed.

The president does not have the power to pardon people for crimes committed at the state level, according to legal experts. All of Peters’ convictions were at the state level, not the federal level. Western Colorado
