SAO PAULO, Dec 12 (Reuters) – The United States removed sanctions imposed on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a statement from the Treasury Department showed on Friday.
The U.S. had sanctioned Moraes under the Global Magnitsky Act in July, punishing the judge who oversaw the trial that led to former President Jair Bolsonaro’s conviction for attempting a coup.
The Trump administration had accused Moraes of weaponizing courts, authorizing arbitrary pre-trial detentions, and suppressing freedom of expression.
