GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Mel Trotter is opening up its shelters to those who need a warm place to sleep in Grand Rapids as temperatures are expected to plunge into the single digits this weekend.
On Friday, Dec. 12, the nonprofit announced a Code Blue emergency in Grand Rapids, which is initiated whenever outside temperatures drop below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The emergency declaration will officially start at 6 p.m. Friday.
Starting tonight, Mel Trotter will open up overflow capacity space at its main shelter at 225 Commerce Ave. SW for anyone who needs a warm place to stay. The nonprofit will also be sending patrols throughout the city to invite those who are living in the streets to stay at the shelter.
