In agreeing to pay a $1,000 fine to settle an ethics investigation, queer San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women member SOPHIA ANDARY is ready to move beyond the matter and focus on protecting the governance powers of her oversight body. It is being targeted for downgrading to a purely advisory panel by a task force that will recommend to city leaders how to streamline the plethora of such citizen oversight bodies.

Also at play is if mayoral appointees to the commissions that will remain need to be reviewed and voted on by the Board of Supervisors. The conversation over such bodies will be taking place in conjunction with debates over how to reform the entire city charter, which has provisions about certain city oversight bodies that were added to it by past voter-approved ballot
