President Donald Trump’s new executive order to block state laws governing artificial intelligence could help the tech industry but hurt health systems looking to adopt AI safely, and leave patients without protection.

This order, aimed at maintaining U.S. dominance in AI, comes after many instances of AI harming people’s health and well-being. Already, lawsuits have been filed against health insurers using AI to cut off care and against AI companies for wrongful deaths and mental breakdowns after using their products. Congress has also scrutinized health insurers over their use of AI .

While the order would simplify compliance burden for AI companies that operate in multiple states, it goes into effect while Congress has still not passed comprehensive federal laws on privacy
