A historic Connecticut landmark was destroyed by a fast-moving fire that killed at least one dog, fire officials said.
The Ithamar Parsons House, which dates to the 1730s, according to Historic Buildings of Connecticut, was destroyed after a fire broke out at the historic Haddam home on Friday, Dec. 12, authorities said.
Fire crews rushed to the home on Middlefield Road, but the building was fully engulfed when they arrived. Firefighters forced their way inside in an attempt to rescue a trapped dog, but were unable to reach it. A dog pulled from the blaze later died from its injuries, Haddam Volunteer Deputy Fire Chief Harry Hall told CT Insider.
Investigators believe the fire started in the basement and quickly spread through the home, according to the report. Hall said the property was a total loss.
A battery pack system in the basement is believed to have caused multiple explosions during the fire. One blast blew out the front windows and sent debris into the yard.
