WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A complicated situation for first responders earlier this week, when police say a man acting erratically interfered in official business, assaulted a firefighter and stole a Wichita Fire squad car.
“It puts us in harm's way anytime we leave the fire station on emergency calls,” said Jose Ocadiz, Wichita Fire Department battalion chief.
Ocadiz says an incident on Wednesday involving fire and EMS at Magnolia Woods Apartment complex was the first time in more than five years a person has stolen and taken a joyride in a Wichita Fire vehicle of any kind.
“Situational awareness is always important,” said Ocadiz.
And that awareness is a skill used extensively during medical calls.
