A Salem County woman died after she was struck by a vehicle Wednesday night, authorities said.

Police officers responded to North Virginia Avenue near East Main Street in Penns Grove shortly after 6 p.m. for a report of an injured pedestrian, according to Jeffrey Barile, with the Salem County Prosecutor’s Office.

They found a 29-year-old Penns Grove woman lying in the roadway with injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle, Barile said in a written statement.

She was transported to Christiana Hospital in Delaware, where she was pronounced dead, he said.

The woman’s name was not released out of respect for her family, according to Barile.

The driver remained at the scene and the crash remains under investigation, Barile said.
