The Santa Maria boys basketball team knows that to be successful it will have to hit its 3-pointers.
But that didn’t happen on Thursday afternoon.
“Our shots didn’t fall,” said Santa Maria coach Johnny Rodriguez.
The Saints hit just nine 3-pointers as they lost to Arroyo Grande 70-51 at the Morro Bay H.I.T. Tournament at Morro Bay High School.
In their five wins Santa Maria has hit an average of 13.3 3-pointers per game.
“That was the game,” Rodriguez said. “We didn’t make enough shots today.”
Arroyo Grande started the game hitting a 3-pointer of its own but the Saints responded on the next possession when Gio Vargas hit a 3-pointer.
While the Saints leaned on their outside shooting, Arroyo Grande used its size in the paint.
