BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - On Friday, Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich proposed an occupancy tax on hotels to alleviate some of the city’s costs.

The goal is to alleviate costs related to tourism, special events, and parks and recreation.

The tax would include hotels and motels as well as bed and breakfasts and short-term rentals. To pass- it would require a 60 percent majority vote from Biloxi residents.

Ward 5 Councilman Paul Tisdale said Biloxi has more special events than most other cities on the Coast.

“So, that puts a financial strain as you might imagine,” Tisdale said. “[There’s] overtime, holiday time for the police department especially but also the public works department, putting up baricades and things of that nature.”
