President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday blocking state-level regulations on artificial intelligence, in an effort to combat “patchwork” policies the administration argues would otherwise hinder development and “embed ideological bias” within AI systems.
The executive order specifically calls out a Colorado law that passed in 2024, set to take effect in June of 2026. That bill, SB24-205, directs tech companies to publicly disclose issues with “algorithmic discrimination” in their AI models. It also requires businesses to tell customers when they’re interacting with an AI instead of a human, and to disclose details about AI algorithms they use for certain decisions involving employment, finances and health care.
