A supermarket is working out cheapest of all for a basket of essentials after copying Aldi's price drop.

We reported last week how Aldi was cheapest for key essentials like bread and butter after reducing the cost of its small pack of chicken breasts .

But now three other supermarkets have followed Aldi's lead, meaning Lidl is cheapest for the first time since the beginning of November.

The price from from £2.15 to £2.09 for 300g of chicken means its overall bill is now £13.12, just a penny less than Aldi's £13.13 and 2p less than Asda's £13.15.

Tesco , with a bill of £13.32, and Sainsbury's - the most expensive at £13.78 - have also reduced the price of their packs as part of their Aldi Price Match schemes. View 4 Images
