NORFOLK — First responders were dispatched on Saturday morning to a fire on board the USS Bataan docked at the General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk shipyard.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue at about 8:50 a.m. were dispatched to a fire initially believed to be on the Navy ship’s catwalk. Upon firefighters’ arrival, it was found to be in the ship’s interior, near its gym. Ship staff by then had hose lines in place.

The fire was considered by officials controlled at 9:57 a.m., an NFR statement said. Two ship members were evaluated by medics but refused medical transport.

As of about 10 a.m., the scene was considered by fire officials to be active.

No additional details were immediately available.
